Each month, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries releases a report detailing the top-selling vehicles across Australia. Pickles’ monthly vehicle report presents the top 10 vehicles from this list and recounts industry news and trends as they affect the Australian market.

Growth in new car purchases remain on an upwards trajectory, even amid concern for rising interest rates across Australia. During this growth there has been a clear preference in the purchase of SUVs and light commercial vehicles, with the combined sales of both taking over 80% of sales throughout October.
A 16.9% increase compared to October of 2021 may indicate a slow resolution of supply chain issues more than it does an overall increase in the market. As international production has well and truly kicked back into gear, Australia is seeing more ease in accessing new vehicle purchases. As global manufacturers overcome the logistical issues caused by COVID-19, Australians have begun ordering assets that previously came with month- to year-long backlogs. This influx of new assets will eventually have an effect on the used car market, as we may begin to see a return to normal supplies of popular vehicles over time.
It was another strong month for electric vehicle sales, although the share of the market for October (10.8%) was an eighth of the total sales of SUV and light commercial vehicles. It is the Australian consumer preference for these cars that may prove to be a barrier in policy making aimed at encouraging a switch to EV and hybrid vehicles. It is particularly concerning when considering the lack of low emissions and affordable options in these vehicle models. While there are numerous government incentives for low-emissions passenger vehicles, there is a clear lack of practical options and support for Australians who need or prefer SUV and light commercial models.

1. Ford Ranger - Up 36.1% YoY
Making a huge YoY jump in October, the Ford Ranger sold over 5,600 units for the month. The Ford Ranger is well-known for its work horse features while maintaining a stylish exterior. With a range of variations available on Ford’s famous model, Pickles sales typically feature Rangers with various features and accessories to suit every need.
2. Toyota Hilux - Up 23.3% YoY
The Toyota Hilux was once again at the top of the most purchased car models in Australia for the month. The Australian favourite sold over 4,800 units in October, which was a 23.3% YoY growth compared to 2021.
3. Toyota RAV4 - Up 92.9% YoY
After back-to-back dips over the months prior to October, the RAV4 made an extreme jump up the list with 92.9% YoY growth. Given the RAV4 is always in high demand, keeping up to date with Pickles’ sales is the best way to purchase a quality used model.
4. Mazda CX-5 - Up 237% YoY
The stylish and compact Mazda CX-5 is one of Australia’s most popular mid-sized vehicles. The SUV is a Japanese-made model and is popular due mostly to its affordability in comparison to its competitors. Because the CX-5 has been on the Australian market for a few years, there are many used models available.
5. MG ZS - Up 104% YoY
MG vehicles are popping up with increasing frequency, as models from the Chinese-owned brand feature seriously affordable price tags. The only downside to MG vehicles is because of their relative newness to the Australian market, they are infrequently found on the used car market. Therefore it is important to stay up to date with Pickles sales to get ahold of a quality used model.
6. Isuzu UTE D-MAX - Up 15.2% YoY
The D-MAX is a popular car choice for buyers who need the practicality of a work vehicle along with the versatility of a family car. The Isuzu Ute D-MAX sold just shy of 2,000 units during October and is proving to be a go-to vehicle for ute owners.
7. Kia Sportage - Up 405% YoY
After another astronomical leap for the Kia Sportage, the vehicle saw 405% YoY growth compared to October 2021. The Sportage is a popular choice for families who love creature comforts, and buyers seeking a car versatile enough to move between city and country easily.

8. MG MG3 - Up 43.7% YoY
Another MG model, the MG3 sold over 1,800 units over October which is a 43.7% YoY growth compared to the same month in 2021. Another extremely affordable make from the Chinese-owned brand that has seen a rise in popularity.
9. Mitsubishi ASX - Up 18.4% YoY
Mitsubishi’s ASX model is the compact SUV model of Australian dreams. The practical but stylish make usually comes after the Triton and Outlander in popularity, but was the brand’s favourite vehicle in October with over 1,700 units sold.
10. Mitsubishi Triton - Up 182% YoY
With just over 1,600 units sold in October, the Mitsubishi Triton is a staple Japanese vehicle on the Australian market. The Triton is a powerhouse machine that features accessories that allow comfort and safety, such as an electrochromatic rearview mirror, bull bars, sports bars and Smartphone Link Display Audio (SDA).
