April marks historic milestone in new car sales
Each month, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries releases a report detailing the top-selling vehicles across Australia. Pickles’ monthly vehicle report presents the top 10 vehicles from this list and recounts industry news and trends as they affect the Australian market.
Market snapshot
The incredible growth of Australia’s new vehicle market is showing no signs of slowing down, with yet another record-breaking month of sales in April. This surge in the market resulted in highest-ever year-to-date (YTD) figures for new vehicle sales. With over 97,000 new cars sold in April alone, the total number of cars sold in Australia in 2024 has surpassed 400,000 units. This is a big jump compared to the same month in 2023, which saw 50,000 fewer vehicles sold by this time of the year. Back-to-back months of booming results have created a 10-month record-breaking streak of results, which is likely to continue through May and June as we see buyers take advantage of EOFY vehicle offers.
Results for April indicate that the current market appetite remains directed largely towards SUVs and light commercial vehicles — a trend that has persisted through the first quarter of 2024. Together, both segments totaled over 77% of the total purchases over April and reflect ongoing demand for models that suit the work/play lifestyle choices of Australian buyers. In the eco-conscious car category, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles saw a jump in sales for the month, while battery electric vehicle sales saw a decrease of almost 2% compared to the previous year. Despite the fluctuating sales of eco-conscious cars through the year, there is a noticeable shift in the market towards a preference in electric and hybrid models.
