The top 10 cars Australians loved in April
Each month, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries releases a report detailing the top-selling vehicles across Australia. Pickles’ monthly vehicle report presents the top 10 vehicles from this list and recounts industry news and trends as they affect the Australian market.
Market snapshot
New car sales throughout April were steady, with only a marginal increase compared to the same month in 2022. However, sales for the month saw the market rise overall after a slower period in March. The new car market appears to be slowly but surely rising, which confirms an impressive appetite from Australian buyers given the inflated consumer stress related to interest rates and the cost of living crisis.
April signalled another month of increased interest in electric and hybrid vehicles, with EV purchases accounting for 8% of sales for the month. This is a 1.1% jump comparative to April of last year. In fact, of the top 10 cars sold in April, 5 of them offered some form of electrification. It is likely that this movement towards electrification will continue, with more vehicle brands jumping on the bandwagon.
Consumers turning towards electric/hybrid model vehicles is unsurprising given government incentives available for buyers making environmentally conscious car purchases. It is assumed that this trend will continue, and that an even greater escalation would have been seen in the marketplace if the industry hadn’t faced global manufacturing and transport issues over the last two years.
SUVs and light commercial vehicles also had another strong month, claiming 76.8% of all vehicle sales for the month. While Australian consumers have always shown a strong preference for SUVs, the popularity appears to be increasing year-on-year.

1. Ford Ranger - 3,567 units sold in April

4. Tesla Model Y - 2,095 units sold in April

5. Hyundai i30 - 2,029 units sold in April
The Hyundai i30 is one of Australia’s most popular compact vehicles, and is consistently a first choice for buyers looking for a compact hatchback or sedan. Over 2,000 i30 units sold in April and luckily due to the popularity of the vehicles.
6. Mitsubishi Outlander - 1,829 units sold in April
The Outlander is a favourite of Australian families due to its spacious and stylish design. As a staple of the Australian car market, buyers are privy to a great deal of choice of used models featured in Pickles’ sales.
7. Isuzu UTE D-MAX - 1,809 units sold in April
For car buyers looking for the practicality of a work vehicle along with the versatility of a family car, the D-MAX is a popular car choice. Just under 2,000 Isuzu Ute D-MAX were sold in April, favoured by business and tradie buyers.
8. Hyundai Tucson - 1,678 units sold in April
The Hyundai Tucson sold over 1,500 units throughout April in a range of variations from 2WD to AWD, to Active, Elite and Highlander models. The Hyundai Tucson is popular for its suitability to road trips and its range of accessories that protect against harsh Australian conditions.
9. MG ZS - 1,588 units sold in April
MG vehicles are popping up with increasing frequency, as models from the Chinese-owned brand feature seriously affordable price tags that are attracting buyers amid growing interest rates and high living costs. The only downside to MG vehicles is, that because of their relative newness to the Australian market, it can be a challenge to find a quality used model in the car market.
10. Tesla Model 3 - 1,581 units sold in April
Built for safety and with style in mind, the fully electric Tesla Model 3 boasts fast acceleration, superb handling and great aerodynamics and is considered to be one of the smartest mid-size cars on the market. The Tesla Model 3 has seen months of sales growth amid Australian consumer demand for electric vehicles.
