June sets another record despite drop in sales

Each month, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries releases a report detailing the top-selling vehicles across Australia. Pickles’ monthly vehicle report presents the top 10 vehicles from this list and recounts industry news and trends as they affect the Australian market.

Market snapshot

Despite a small dip in sales for June, the first half of 2024 set a record for new car sales in Australia. With over 630,000 new vehicle sales in the first 6 months of the year, results in 2024 have so far been record breaking and are up 8.7% on the former sales record in 2018. Overall, results are high, even if June did represent a slight dip in sales (4.2%) compared to the same month in 2023.

Almost 120,000 new cars were sold across Australia throughout June, with a dip in results noted in every location except the Australian Capital Territory. This dip in sales has been a long time coming, with most motor vehicle insiders having originally expected results to slow down this time last year. This change in speed may continue in the coming months, as the long backlog of new car orders reach buyers and results can only represent interest for that month as opposed to a car bought now, but ordered many months ago.

The EV market continues to fluctuate drastically, with a 13.2% dip in June after a large increase in May. YoY the EV segment is down, accounting for 8% of the market in June 2024 compared to 8.8% in the same month in 2023. Australian consumers can’t quite seem to make their mind up about the switch to electric vehicles, though the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) is hopeful for EVs to go over 100,000 sales by the end of the year. Consumers appear more interested in hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, with sales in June up over 84% compared to June 2023 and YTD sales up 114% overall.
