The top 10 cars Australians loved in June

Each month, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries releases a report detailing the top-selling vehicles across Australia. Pickles’ monthly vehicle report presents the top 10 vehicles from this list and recounts industry news and trends as they affect the Australian market.

Market snapshot

June was a huge month for vehicle sales as consumers quickly tried to acquire new cars ahead of the end of the financial year. Australians bought over 120,000 vehicles in June, which was a huge 25% increase in sales compared YoY with the same month in 2022. In fact, June 2023 sales marked a 5-year record of sales for the month, showing encouraging growth for the sector amidst national economic turmoil.

June was also a strong month for electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid models, with purchases of zero and low emissions vehicles taking 16.6% of the overall sales for the month. The Tesla Model Y was the most popular amongst consumers in June, taking the spot as the second most sold vehicle for the month. This sector growth is expected to continue, with manufacturers promising more and more emissions-focused vehicle models. The Australian market may also begin to see the introduction of electric vehicles with more affordable price points, and more assets available on the used market as more vehicles are bought and exported into the country.

Toyota led the share of sales for June, with the Hilux model retaining the top spot as the most sold vehicle in Australia. As we reach the halfway point in the year, it’s clear that the Toyota Hilux is the frontrunner for most sold Australian vehicle in 2023, which the model also won in 2022.
