The top 10 cars Australians loved in 2022
Each month, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries releases a report detailing the top-selling vehicles across Australia. Pickles’ monthly vehicle report presents the top 10 vehicles from this list and recounts industry news and trends as they affect the Australian market.
Australia finished 2022 with strong new vehicle car sales throughout December, with over 87,000 units purchased. This was a 12.1% increase compared to sales in the same month in 2021. The year concluded with over a million new car sales, which is a considerable, but unsurprising growth, given the state of the market where demand far exceeds supply.
The sales throughout 2022 indicate that small to midsize SUVs and hatchbacks were the most popular car amid private buyers, and that large SUVs and utes were favoured by business fleets and tradies. In a huge year of sales for both brands, the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger topped the charts as the most popular ute, as they have for the last 7 years. The results also showed a strong year for both the MG 3, known best for its low price point, and the Tesla Model 3, which is one of the strongest electric vehicles on the market.
