Each month, the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries releases a report detailing the top-selling vehicles across Australia. Pickles’ monthly vehicle report presents the top 10 vehicles from this list and recounts industry news and trends as they affect the Australian market.
Market snapshot
March was the slowest month for new car sales so far in 2023, with overall sales seeing a 3.9 percent decrease compared to the same month last year. This small dip is unconcerning, given sales throughout March were still strong in general especially given supply constraints. New car sales overall have increased 2.5 percent year to date, which is impressive growth in a market affected by supply chains, interest rates, and the cost of living crisis.
Environmentally-focused vehicles are going from strength to strength each month, with March delivering a 19.5 percent increase on battery electric vehicles and 33.3 percent increase on plug-in hybrid vehicles compared to the same period in 2022. This growth was expected as Australians turn to investing in EVs to take advantage of government incentives and future proof their vehicle purchases.
The Australian consumer preference for utes and SUVs is still growing, with ute models taking out the top three spots for best selling cars in March. The strong growth in this division is highlighting the movement away from passenger vehicles, which is down 21.9% compared to March 2022.

1. Toyota Hilux - 4,583 units sold in March
The Toyota Hilux took the top spot for best selling car in March, with a huge increase in sales compared to the month before. 2. Ford Ranger - 4,508 units sold in March

3. Isuzu UTE D-MAX - 2,789 units sold in March

4. Mitsubishi Outlander - 2,169 units sold in March
The Outlander is a favourite of Australian families due to its spacious and stylish design. As a staple of the Australian car market, buyers are privy to a great deal of choice of used models featured in Pickles’ sales.
5. Tesla Model Y - 1,938 units sold in March
Amidst months of extremely strong EV sales, it’s no surprise that the Tesla Model Y was among the top selling vehicles for March. The Tesla Model Y is one of several popular EV makes that have seen an increase in sales as Australians turn towards EV/hybrid vehicle options. Teslas don’t last long once they’re received by Pickles, so it’s crucial to keep up-to-date with sales in order to get your hands on a used model.
6. Mazda CX-5 - 1,917 units sold in Marcht
The stylish and compact Mazda CX-5 is a Japanese-made model and one of the reasons it is popular is because of its affordable price point in comparison to its competitors. Because the CX-5 has been on the Australian market for a few years, there are many used models available.
7. Subaru Forester - 1,881 units sold in March
The Australian classic, the Subaru Forester, saw great sales across March. This SUV is loved by families who need a compact but efficient vehicle. Luckily for buyers, the model is a frequent find amongst Pickles’ motor vehicle auctions.
8. MG ZS - 1,844 units sold in March
MG vehicles are popping up with increasing frequency, as models from the Chinese-owned brand feature seriously affordable price tags that are attracting buyers amid growing interest rates and high living costs. The only downside to MG vehicles is, that because of their relative newness to the Australian market, it can be a challenge to find a quality used model in the car market.
9. Toyota RAV4 - 1,778 units sold in March
The RAV4 is one of Australia’s most popular vehicles, and sold just shy of 1,800 units in March. Given the RAV4 is always in high demand, keeping up to date with Pickles’ sales is the best way to purchase a quality used model.
10. Isuzu MU-X - 1,745
The Isuzu MU-X is a mid-size SUV, favoured by buyers looking for off-road features without investing in a large model. While not as popular as the D-MAX, this model is becoming an increasingly popular option amongst buyers and is delivering excellent sales growth.
