The
new electric car plan was released in April and outlines the ACT's plans to have a full zero emissions car fleet by 2021. They will phase out buying petrol and diesel-powered engines to encourage residents to buy electric cars instead. It is part of the territory's aim to achieve a 40% reduction in emissions on 1990 levels by 2020 and achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
ACT offer generous benefits including zero stamp duty on new zero emissions cars and a 20% discount on registration fees.
Under the new electric car plan, the ACT government will:
- amend the Parking and Vehicle Access General Code to require all new multi-unit and mixed-use developments to install charging infrastructure
- install new charging stations on major routes to and from Canberra including Sydney and coastal areas
- allow zero emissions vehicles to drive in transit lanes until 2023
The ACT Government is also looking at ways to increase the use of electric bikes and already has eight in their fleet.
